Hiring Compliance Talent in Crypto: Mindset Over Manuals

As Web3 companies mature and regulatory frameworks evolve, the need for skilled compliance professionals has never been greater. But how do you actually find the right people to fill these roles, especially in crypto, where traditional experience doesn’t always translate?

In a conversation during our Paris Blockchain Week workshop, Vanessa Moreno (CMO at ComPilot) posed this exact question to two experts who’ve built and led compliance teams in the space: Cécile Henry (Head of Compliance and Legal at Meria and Deskoin, and Co-Founder of Seqlense) and Delphine Forma (Head of Policy Europe at SolidusLabs).

Their insights are essential reading for anyone hiring, or becoming, a crypto compliance officer.

The Talent Gap in Crypto Compliance

Cécile Henry highlighted a practical reality: crypto compliance professionals are rare. And those who combine regulatory expertise with blockchain fluency? Even rarer.

“From a global perspective, compliance officers are not the easiest people to find and hire. And compliance officers or legal officers who understand blockchain… that’s a reduced population.”

Her proposed solution? Education. To grow the pipeline of qualified talent, we need to integrate blockchain and Web3 finance into legal, compliance, and risk management training.

“We need more people in compliance. That starts with more exposure and more learning opportunities.”

It’s About Mindset More Than Qualifications

Delphine Forma echoed the need for skills, but emphasized that mindset is just as important as technical knowledge.

“A good crypto compliance officer, it’s a question of mindset. You need to be open-minded, creative, and want to work with the business.”

In traditional finance, compliance is often siloed. But in crypto, compliance officers must be embedded in the business, contributing to product and strategy decisions from day one.

“In banks, you’re just a little piece of the puzzle. In crypto, you’re a business partner. That’s why flexibility and creativity are absolutely key.”

Crypto Compliance Means Staying Curious

Working in crypto compliance means staying curious, connected, and committed. Delphine reminded us that you don’t need to know everything upfront, but you do need to be willing to figure things out.

“If you’re a smart person, you can always figure it out. Just read the text. No one is stupid.”

And while formal channels matter, so do communities.

“You can probably find great people in my Telegram group.”

Why This Matters Now

As Web3 matures, compliance is no longer a side conversation. It’s a strategic priority and a source of competitive advantage. But none of it is possible without the right people.

At ComPilot, we work with companies that see compliance as more than a regulatory hurdle. They see it as a shared responsibility and a creative, collaborative effort. That means hiring people who don’t just understand the rules, but help shape how they’re applied.

Whether you're a founder looking to grow your team or a compliance officer curious about crypto, the takeaway is clear: talent is key, but mindset makes the difference.
